Stillorgan Shopping Centre is to be redeveloped and extended at a cost of £30 million following a decision by Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council to grant permission for the scheme. Local residents are likely to lodge an appeal against the decision. An additional 100,000 sq ft of retail space is to be provided, about 40,000 sq ft less than had been sought. However, the owners can apply at a later stage to use new space at first-floor level for retail purposes. The planners have also cleared the way for about 1,100 spaces in a multi-storey car-park, which will include basement level. The basement will also have a new anchor store.

The new complex will cover most of the existing car-park at the front and side of the centre. The four-storey building will have retail at ground and first floor levels in addition to the basement. Part of the two upper floors will be used as offices. The redevelopment will introduce a radical change in the centre and re-establish a streetscape on both Lower Kilmacud Road and the Dublin Road. The existing malls will remain largely single storey when the malls are covered in and refurbished. Designed by architects A + D Wejchert, the new building will be concentrated along the Dublin Road and Lower Kilmacud frontages rather than at the rear of the shopping centre. The entrance and exit for the car-park will be along the Dublin Road. The Stillorgan centre is seriously hampered at the moment by traffic congestion, particularly at weekends.

The creation of additional retail space will allow the owners bring in a number of high-profile UK multiples to enable it to compete with newer shopping centres.

The centre is owned by an investment company headed by Treasury Holdings which is controlled by Richard Barrett and John Ronan.
