Trending . . . blue and white tableware

Blue and white patterned tableware is making a comeback. This Tulpan blue and white vase is a reproduction of one of many blue and white designs originally imported by the Swedish East India Company during the 18th century. It was a company set up in Gothenburg with the aim of importing goods from east Asia, mainly China. These various blue and white designs have since become a trademark of the classic Swedish style, which is more decorative than the pared back Scandi chic beloved by design bibles. This porcelain vase, 27cm by 30cm, is impressive on its own. Add fresh flowers and it falls into the more is more school of decor. It is reduced from about €216 to €151, ex- delivery, on UK-based skandihome.com and would make a wonderful wedding or birthday gift.

Three of the best . . . National History interiors

Whale bones have always had a magical quality. They demonstrate the scale of the planet’s largest mammal and can imbue a home with sculptural accents. O’Sullivan Antiques (01-454 1143, osullivanantiques.com) has a collection of seven blue whale vertebrae, circa 1700, from one of the Polynesian islands. They were discovered in the 1950s above sea level and have been set on black iron stands. Each costs about €950. The set costs €6,650.
