WHILE CREGGANE MANOR in Rosscarbery, west Cork, above, was built in 1871 in a Gothic-revival style, there were buildings on this site dating back to before Gothic times. The 36-acre beach-side site this house sits in was once home to the School of Ross, set up by St Fachtna in the 6th century, turning the locale into a university town.

Creggane Manor, which is for sale through Sherry FitzGerald at €1.5 million, has four bedrooms and three bathrooms on its upper floor and two reception rooms, study, kitchen, utility and large conservatory on the ground floor. Among the outbuildings are stables and haylofts that have been converted into guest accommodation. - Emma Cullinan
