Classic Clontarf redbrick with pretty details intact

Dublin 3: €1.6m St Lawrence Road is where you'll find some of the larger, more stately redbrick houses in Clontarf, Dublin 3. Frankford, at 66 St Lawrence Road, was built in 1880 and has a great many intact features and detail dating from that time. The rear garden stretches to an impressive 100m/300 ft and has vehicular access.

Semi-detached, Frankford has high-ceilinged rooms and 223 sq m (2,400 sq ft) of floor space divided between five/six bedrooms and two/three reception rooms. It is for sale through HOK Residential which is quoting a guide price of €1.6 million in advance of its auction on October 28th. The house next door to Frankford sold a little over a year ago, in walk-in condition, for €1.75 million.

Frankford's origins are immediately apparent in a quarry tiled path leading to the front door, in the wrought-iron work over the bay window and in the main entrance door, which is double and opens in the centre.

Inside - though covered in some instances by the stud walls and/or carpeting which are the result of a time when the house was in two units - many of the floorboards are original, as is coving and plasterwork. Most fireplaces too are original, as are internal doors and the sash windows to the front of the house.

The entrance hallway, in particular, has impressive original plasterwork which gracefully trails the walls and the wide arch leading to the rear part of the house. There is a guest toilet at the latter end of the hallway.

The diningroom has an original white marble fireplace, centre rose and cornicework. There is a timber period fireplace in the sittingroom, which is to the front and has the benefit of light from the bay window. Here too there is original cornicework and a centre rose.

Double doors lead from the diningroom to a kitchenette, beyond which there is an extension with two bedrooms. Both have windows to the side. The almost 15ft square breakfastroom has an original marble fireplace while the kitchen has fitted wall and floor units, a hotpress and a door to the rear.

An en suite bedroom on the first floor return has built-in wardrobes. The en suite has a shower, wash-hand basin and toilet. Also on the return there is a bathroom and a separate toilet.

The first floor landing, as was typical of the style of the period, is spacious and bright. Off it a very large bedroom with original marble fireplace and cornicework could make for a third reception room.
