Plans to build more than 400 apartments, including a 17-storey tower, in Sandyford, Dublin 18, have been given the go-ahead by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council.
Glencairn Developments has been given the green light for the apartment scheme on a 5.7-acre site off Murphystown Road.
The land originally formed part of Glencairn, the mansion and extensive grounds which was once home to the British Ambassador .
Headed by Cork developer John Fleming, Glencairn Developments paid close to €25 million for the development site when it was purchased it from a Galway-based consortium, TBD Properties, in 2004.
The site was originally sold by the British Foreign Office to Michael Cotter's Park Developments around seven years ago.
The development will involve the construction of 405 apartments in six blocks ranging in height from five to 17 storeys. Access to the development will be via a new access road from Murphystown Road.
Meanwhile, residents in the Leopardstown area of south Dublin have objected to plans by Viscount Securities to build 263 apartments and houses on an adjacent site, also on the former Glencairn lands.
