A man who drowned after he fell into the water at the Annalee river in Ballyhaise, Co Cavan, has been named locally as James Anthony Fanthorpe McHugh.
Gardaí and emergency services received reports of a person in the Annalee river at Drumaraw, Ballyhaise, at 8.30pm on Tuesday.
It is believed the man, aged in his 20s and from Ballyhaise, was fishing when he fell in to the river and got into difficulty.
Gardaí said emergency personnel attempted to revive him after his body was recovered from the water but he was later pronounced dead at the scene.

His body has been removed to Cavan Mortuary where a postmortem will be arranged at Our Lady’s National Hospital Navan, gardaí said.
A file will also be prepared for the coroner.
