Cannabis worth an estimated €7 million has been seized from a property in Co Kildare as part of a Garda operation targeting organised crime.

The substance was found by gardaí at a building in Athy, in an operation led by the local drugs unit with support from units from the Kildare/Carlow area and the Garda Eastern Region.

Four people were arrested during the search, which was conducted as part of series of planned searches across the county on Wednesday, April 1st.

Three of the arrested individuals are men – two in their 30s, one in his 40s – and one is a woman in her 20s.

An Garda Síochána said the four were being detained at Garda stations in the Garda Eastern Region under drug trafficking legislation.

The seized cannabis, the Garda said, will be analysed by Forensic Science Ireland and an incident room as been set up at a Garda station in Cavan.

The searches form part of Operation Tara, an a national anti-drugs strategy launched in 2021 to disrupt, dismantle and prosecute drug trafficking and supply networks.

Investigations are set to continue.
