We have two very modern wines this week. They tick a lot of boxes for the conscious wine drinker: lighter in alcohol, lighter glass bottle, sustainable, organic, vegan, labels and closures made using recycled plastic.

Because they are lighter in alcohol, they are also lower in calories – 54 per 100ml, where most wine is 70-85.

I suspect the grapes used to make these wines are harvested early; this means they will be lower in sugar and therefore lighter in alcohol.

They are also higher in acidity, making the wines more refreshing. They are exclusive to O’Briens.

Grapur Vino Italiano Rosso

9%, 54 cal per 100ml, €15.99 (down to €12.99)

Fresh and lively with plenty of red cherry fruits and a tannin-free finish. Serve cool rather than chilled. This would be nice on its own or with snacks before dinner.
