Loughcrew House & Historic Gardens, in Oldcastle, Co Meath, will provide an atmospheric outdoor setting next month for performances of Mozart's Don Giovanni.
This Opera À La Carte production, under artistic director Nicholas Heath, is the fifth opera at Loughcrew, and the third Mozart work, since Emily Naper decided there could be no better place to stage an opera than in her family's magnificent garden.
The Loughcrew seasons began in 2000, with the first of Mozart's trio of comic operas, The Marriage Of Figaro (1786), and continued the following year with a change in tone, with Verdi's Rigoletto (1851). Rossini's The Barber Of Seville took the stage in 2002. Last year Mozart returned to Loughcrew with Cosí Fan Tutte, left, which dates from 1790, three years later than Don Giovanni.
The performances, which will take place in the round on Friday July 9th and Saturday July 10th, beneath canvas, include a one-hour interval for dinner (€30, in addition to €95 for an opera ticket) or a picnic, formal dress expected. All very civilised.
