Workman's Club, Wellington Quay, Dublin Sun 4 pm €10 theworkmansclub.com01-670662
This is what I’m talking about – a whole evening of new, live music that defies the genre police and fires the creative spirit after the dulling effects of all that turkey. And its yours for a measly tenner.
This enterprising new collective of Dublin jazz musicians have nailed the zeitgeist with their knowing reference to Miles Davis’s classic, hard-swinging recording. The local scene is currently fizzing with energy and talent, and Workin’ is exactly what these players should be doing more of.
The bulging bill includes drummer Matt Jacobsen’s palindromically inclined RedivideR; the ECM-inspired Leafzang; the hard-swinging mainstream jazz of guitarist Hugh Buckley; International Bar favourites The Asteroids of Doom; a solo set from adventurous eight-string guitarist Shane Latimer; and the return of songwriter and improviser Laura Hyland and her group Clang Sayne.
If you want to blow away the cobwebs with some hard-working live music, in the faded grandeur of the Workman’s Club (whose helpful staff will be happy to put a beverage in front of you), then things get cookin’ around 4pm.
