Fools of rock: weird and wonderful April 1st musical pranks

From Björk taking over as lead singer of Led Zeppelin to Coldplay’s customised fragrance

Coldplay - Smell U Like
On April 1st, 2010, Coldplay announced on their website that, just like their good mate Beyoncé, they would be launching their own customised fragrance: Angst by Coldplay (right) . Created by distilling a blend of "sangre, sudor and lagrimas" (that's blood, sweat and tears to you, mate) sourced from Fair Trade suppliers, the fragrance would be presented in a bottle designed by Brian Eno. "People like to smell nice," Chris Martin noted on the band's website, "and we thought we could help them out."

We Kid Rock You Not
On April 1st, 2009, Michigan native Kid Rock announced that he had acquired the naming rights to the venue of American League baseball team Detroit Tigers. From now on, Rock proudly claimed, Comerica Park would be known as Kid Rock Field – and the newly named venue would also sell his own lager brand, Badass Beer (which does actually exist).

Hanson tie a Slipknot
On April 1st, 2011, 1990s teeny boppers Hanson shocked their ageing fanbase by announcing that their next album would consist entirely of covers of Slipknot songs. We're still waiting with bated breath.

Björk's Whole Lotta Love
On April 1st, 2009, Bjork confused everyone (nothing new there, we agree) when she announced that, due to Robert Plant's ongoing collaboration with US country/roots singer Alison Krauss, she would be taking over as lead singer of Led Zeppelin. She also stated that a new Led Zep tour would commence in June of that year and would consist of songs only from the first and fourth LZ albums.
