Mysterious Phonk: Chronicles of SpaceGhostPurrp 4AD****
For many, this will be their first introduction to the world of SpaceGhostPurrp. Bringing together a smattering of Miami producer Muney Jordan’s previously released rumbles from mixtapes, Mysterious Phonk puts you right into the heart of the SpaceGhostPurrp experience. Much of Jordan’s appeal comes from how he roams far and wide in search of killer touches to embellish his woozy patina, turning fuzzy bleeps, ghostly glitches and off-kilter bass into strangely effective springboards.
He’s equally murky when it comes to what he has to say, with Bringing the Phonk, The Black God and Grind On Me full of dark, dense transmissions from his lair. SpaceGhostPurrp has found digs for himself at the 4AD label, which says much about how the one-time home of ethereal, ambient Cocteau pastels has rejuvenated itself. 4ad.com
