Daphne & Celeste: Save The World review – bizarre and brazen

During Daphne & Celeste's performance of Ooh Stick You at Reading Festival in 2000, metal fans protested the presence of this peculiar pop duo by throwing bottles of urine onstage. Some 18 years later they are back with their second album Daphne & Celeste Save The World, produced by Max Tundra, and it toes the line between genius and insane.

With glitchy music that sounds how brain freeze feels, Karen ‘Daphne’ DiConcetto and Celeste Cruz are throwing two fingers up to the world in a heavily autotuned, watered-down Bananarama kind of way that’s less catchy and in no way as good.

Anarchic and hilarious, they show off their comedic chops on Song to a Succulent, a love song for the potted plants that fill our homes and the empty void inside and on BB, which stands for basic busker, by taking down the maudlin – mostly male – musicians that flood the charts.

The soundscape flits between a Vine video, the My Little Pony theme song on ecstasy and the nightmares of LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy. Daphne & Celeste are bizarrely but magnificently brazen and maybe their off-kilter sugar rush could Save the World. It won't, but we can dream.
