The dream honeymoon: two weeks at a seven-star resort in the Maldives, all-inclusive luxury. But when Gemma’s husband disappears, the trip feels more like a nightmare. She feels the accusatory stares, retreats to their isolated bungalow and begins to doubt her own recollection of events.

The newlyweds had fought on the night of the disappearance and her memories are jumbled-up in a night of excess alcohol and bitter resentment. Had he gone out for a moonlit swim and been swallowed up by the tide, or is there something more sinister at play?

Local and UK police are called in to investigate and Gemma fears the worst. She fears her own involvement.

The unreliable narrator is called upon to guide readers through events leading to the disastrous honeymoon. She is not a pleasant protagonist. Far from it; she is deceitful and manipulative: “All I can do is answer the questions they ask me, and make sure I do so in an appropriately wifely way.” But is she to blame?
