To Ted Morton (1943-2025)

On the lead mines

your gorse-gold presence will remain
outshining any sun even in the rain.

And the wind around the house you built
will pluck the strings of your guitar

urging us to sing with you as of old –
by the fireside your stories told and untold.

You will table the moon’s highest tides
and continue your watch over Dublin Bay,

waiting for us to join you one day.

Patricia McCarthy has a new collection, Round the Mulberry Bush, due from Waterloo Press/Agenda Editions this spring
