Consulting engineers Arup Ireland has won a three-year contract with the National Roads Authority (NRA) to provide consultancy on road tolling.

It is understood the value of the contract is in the order of €4 million.

Arup, working with its subcontractor partner the IBI Group, will help the NRA to facilitate pan-European traffic to use Irish toll roads, a requirement of the 2004 EU EETS directive.

When complete, Irish drivers who sign up to the service will be able to use their electronic tolling tag on any toll road in the European Union.

“We are extremely pleased to have won this project,” said Eoghan Lynch, group leader of Arup Ireland. “This work is part of a major EU-wide project designed to bring about freer movement of vehicles throughout the European Union.”

Last week electronic tolling tag provider Easytrip introduced Trans Europe, a new service which allows hauliers to use their tolling tags in 12 countries in Europe including France, Frejus tunnels, Spain, Italy and Germany.
