BOOKMARK: Yokie for people- powered search

Twitter isn’t just a social-media site, it kind of works like a people-powered search engine too. The problem is that it’s hard to find the good stuff. CLARITY researcher Owen Phelan has created a Twitter search tool called Yokie to solve this problem. Yokie has curated a bunch of influential Twitter folk so that you can find and rank better content by popularity and “interestingness”.

INSTALL: Metasurf for safer Chrome surfing

Chrome users with young children will like this free browser add-on. It blocks all sexually explicit content and constantly crawls the web updating its list. More than half a billion web pages have been labelled for family safety by its technology. It’s also a good tool to have installed on browsers in the workplace to prevent embarrassing moments from spam links.

LEARN. . . and have fun with Memrise

The entire internet can be viewed as a free educational tool, but retaining this information is the problem! Memrise helps you (yup, you guessed it!) memorise new languages and other diverse areas of knowledge such as art history, musical notation, tropical fish or sports trivia. It’s free, it’s fun and it’s addictive. This highly visual, interactive website encourages you to plant “seeds of knowledge” and cultivate them into plants that grow in your long-term memory. Just be sure to keep watering them.
