Chrome gains speed and Firefox previews its iOS app

Google browser can detect when a site isn’t busy while Mozilla announces new features

Good news on the browser front: Google has released a speedier update for the Chrome browser and Mozilla is testing its long-awaited Firefox app for iOS. Tweaks to Chrome include detecting when a website isn't busy and using this time to clean up old memory. Google says this reduces website memory usage by, on average, 10 per cent except in the case of Gmail: leaving this tab open is now almost 25 per cent less of a memory drain. Hurrah!

While Mozilla is testing Firefox for iOS, the public preview is, for now, only available in New Zealand.

Based on feedback from this, new features will be added, and it should be available in the App Store later this year. Some current features include Intelligent Search, which returns a choice of search engines as well as search results, making it easy to switch between Google, DuckDuckGo or Bing.
