The University of Ulster's new open- and distance-learning programme will be powered by Sun Microsystems, after Horizon Open Systems won the contract against stiff opposition.

Horizon Open Systems is Sun's country partner in Ireland and Sun's academic business centre in Northern Ireland. It beat off competition from IBM and Compaq to win the contract.

The £3 million distance- learning initiative is one of the largest online education projects undertaken by an Irish university.
