Pay cut plan defeated

PLANS to cut boardroom pay for directors of Nationwide Building Society were narrowly defeated at the society's meeting yesterday. A record number of Nationwide members took part in the voting, enticed by plans to donate 10p to charity for each ballot paper returned.

The resolution, put to members at the annual meeting in London yesterday, called for an "immediate review" of pay and recommended that a "substantial reduction be considered".
