As the winter begins in earnest, it is worth remembering that Irish households could save millions of pounds by implementing a number of simple energy-efficient measures. You can begin by introducing some common sense to energy consumption, such as setting thermostats to a comfortable temperature, or turning off electrical appliances fully instead of leaving them on stand-by.

The purchase of low-cost items such as lagging jackets, draught-proofing and energy-efficient lighting are just some of ways of achieving greater efficiency and bringing down energy bills. If every household replaced ordinary light bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), the potential saving is estimated at more than £25 million (€31.74 million) per year.
