US stocks were battered for the second day yesterday on jitters over the impact on US corporations of Asia's financial crisis, with technology stocks the big losers.
The Dow Jones average ended down 132.36 points, or 1.7 per cent, at 7,715.41 after losing 187 points Thursday.
In the broader market, declining issues led advances 15-13 on volume of 675 million shares on the New York Stock Exchange.
The Nasdaq composite index slumped 20.33 points, or 1.2 per cent, to 1,650.92.
The bond market continued to go against the direction of stocks. The bellwether 30-year US Treasury was up 13/32, which lowered its yield to 6.28 percent from 6.31 per cent Thursday.
