Independent Insurance, the British publicly quoted insurer that has a small operation in the Republic, closed its books to new business yesterday saying it was unable to secure fresh capital.

The troubled insurer began trading in the Republic in January 2000 with a staff of 15 and had agency agreements with 25 of the Republic's 600 intermediaries.

Life assurer Equitable Life also closed its books to new business in December 2000.
