IBM, the US technology company that employs 4,000 people here, has appointed a new country manager, following the retirement of its former head of Irish operations, Mr William Burgess.

Mr Burgess, who worked for IBM for 35 years and was its Irish country manager for the past 11 years, will be replaced by Mr Michael Daly, the former Irish director of global services at IBM.

Mr Daly, who joined IBM 17 years ago, will now be responsible for all the firm's Irish operations, which include a range of technology and financial functions.

IBM is one of the biggest technology companies located in the Republic and has sales, manufacturing, treasury, software development, services and distribution facilities in the Dublin area.

Mr Daly, who prior to joining IBM worked in financial services, said yesterday he was looking forward to the challenge of running IBM and its continued success in the Republic.

Mr Burgess, who was appointed IBM's Irish country manager in 1991, held several other senior posts with IBM prior to his Irish appointment, including a two-year assignment at IBM's European headquarters in Paris. He is a current member of the national executive of IBEC.
