The Margin wonders if urbanisation has reached such an extent that the agricultural sector here might have to follow its British counterpart in launching a campaign to identify and fill gaps in children's basic understanding of the food they eat and how it is produced. The move comes on foot of a MORI poll of school children aged between eight and 11 years old which found that while one in five did not know ham came from pigs, one child was convinced that it came from deer.

Nearly a quarter of children did not know that wheat was the main ingredient of bread - instead they thought bread was made mainly from rice, potatoes and yeast.
