FIRST Maryland Bancorp, Allied Irish Banks US subsidiary, is planning a name change for its operating subsidiaries, according to President and Chief Executive Officer, Mr Frank Bramble.

FMB is the holding company for a number of operating companies. First National Bank of Maryland operates the branch franchise in the state of Maryland; First Omni Bank is a special credit card provider; York Bank and Trust is the branch operator in South Pennsylvania; and First National Bank of Maryland DC operates the network in the Washington DC area.

FMB also has specialist leasing, mortgage and insurance subsidiaries with First Maryland/First National/Ark names.

The operations should have one strong brand identity throughout the region, according to Mr Bramble.

"It should be a seamless operation," said chairman, Mr Jerry Casey.

A number of names are being considered, he said, but no decision has yet been made.

As AIB expands in surrounding areas, the First Maryland name is no longer considered an appropriate operating title for banks operating in the neighbouring states of Virginia, Pennsylvania and Delaware and the District of Columbia in which the capital Washington DC is located.
