Pakistan pace bowler Waqar Younis at first denied any knowledge of cricket match fixing during an appearance before a one-man commission yesterday - but later admitted clashes between team members over the issue.

Appearing before Lahore high court judge Malik Mohammad Qayyum, "Waqar denied any knowledge of match fixing initially," a source said yesterday, but when the judge stressed he was a senior team member, "Waqar told of some incidents of altercations between players over match fixing".

The judge then became angry and warned Waqar he faced serious action if he did not tell the truth. Waqar told the commission of an altercation between former Pakistan captain Salim Malik and wicket-keeper Rashid Latif.

"I had to step in and stop them from fighting. Rashid had accused Malik of being involved in match fixing," Waqar told the commission. Waqar denied allegations by Aaqib Javed that he had he obtained a car after a match was fixed in Sri Lanka in 1994.

Waqar, with 267 wickets in 53 Tests, said he always played to his full ability. "We lost one-dayers in England because they are a good one-day side and we did not throw away the match," he said, referring to allegations that he and pace partner Wasim Akram bowled badly to throw a one-day in England in 1992.

The one-man commission was set up by the government last month and is expected to submit its report next month.
