Everton 4 Luton 0Everton breezed into the fourth round with a comprehensive victory over their Championship opponents, but their success was marred by injury to David Weir.
The Everton captain was taken to hospital suffering from concussion after an accidental clash of heads with Luton's Leon Barnett at the end of the first-half.
There was concern from both sets of players as Weir lay motionless on the ground and he required five minutes of treatment before being stretchered off and taken to hospital.
David Moyes opted to go against the trend by naming Andy Johnson, the club's leading scorer, in his starting line-up.
They did not look back after making a 23rd-minute breakthrough. Joleon Lescott headed the ball back across the six-yard area and Tim Cahill headed past Marlon Beresford. Mike Newell's return to Goodison Park got worse when Keith Keane put through his own net in the 34th minute after Johnson had left the defender chasing shadows.
Everton continued from where they left off after half-time as James McFadden, the Scotland international, made it 3-0 in the 53rd minute after finishing off a fine move involving Cahill before Victor Anichebe had the last say.
