Tiger Woods showed the sort of form that saw him capture eight PGA Tour events this year as he stormed up the leaderboard to tie for third place at the end of the HSBC Champions second round.

After a five-week break from the game, Woods showed signs of rustiness on the opening day which saw him end on par and with a lot of work to do to put himself back in contention.

But an impressive round in which he hit seven birdies and an eagle saw him card an eight-under-par 64 to put him on an eight-under, one ahead of Ireland's Order of Merit winner Padraig Harrington, whose 70 leaves him in touch for the weekend.

That now leaves him just two shots off the lead, as India's Jyoti Randhawa's impressive display continued today to ensure he once again finished top of the leaderboard after a three-under-par 69 put him on an impressive 10-under 134 overall.

Finishing just one shot behind Randhawa is Retief Goosen, whose debut in the event has got off to an impressive start.

Seven birdies were enough to ensure he carded a five-under-par 67 to put him on nine-under 135.

The South African said: "I got off to a good start today. Three-under through the first four holes and a nice birdie on 10 as well.

"Then after 15 I was five or six shots off the lead and suddenly finishing with three birdies got me right back into the tournament."

Early leader Marc Warren slipped down the leaderboard as his good display on the back nine was let down by three bogeys coming home but he picked up to par his remaining holes to finish one under par, a seven-under 137 in total.

After three consecutive birdies on his first three holes, defending champion David Howell carded a double bogey on the fifth and followed that disappointment with three bogies on the back nine. He shot an even par 70 but is way off the pace tied at 41.

World number two Jim Furyk improved on his display yesterday to card a six-under-par 66 and put him in 10th place alongside Colin Montgomerie and Luke Donald.
