Kilkenny and Waterford can’t be split
Kilkenny and Waterford will have to do it all again after they couldn’t be separated in Sunday’s All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship semi-final, with an epic in Croke Park finishing Waterford 0-24 Kilkenny 1-21.
The Deise looked to be on the brink of a famous victory when they led by three points in the closing minutes of normal time, but Walter Walsh’s inevitable goal with 68 on the clock pegged back Derek McGrath’s side and a mammoth late point from Conor Fogarty ensured the defending champions live to fight another day. The replay will take place in Thurles at 6.45pm next Saturday.
First silverware at Man United for Mourinho
Jose Mourinho secured his first silverware as Manchester United manager on Sunday after his side beat Leicester City 2-1 at Wembley thanks to goals from Jesse Lingard and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
In the build-up to their Community Shield victory United announced they have reached an agreement with Juventus to sign French midfielder Paul Pogba, who returns to Manchester in a deal believed to be worth €110 million. Pogba is set to undergo a medical at Carrington on Tuesday.
Furyk smashes Tour record
Elsewhere Jim Furyk broke a PGA Tour record after he shot a sensational 58 in the final round of the Travelers Championship, the American reaching the turn in just 27 shots. Scotland’s Russell Knox boosted his Ryder Cup claims with a one-stroke victory.
Rio 2016: Good start for boxers
And in the Olympics Ireland’s boxers got off to a strong start in Rio, with both Steven Donnelly and David Oliver Joyce winning their opening bouts.
There were mixed fortunes in the pool however, with Fiona Doyle finishing last in her 100m breaststroke heat, with Shane Ryan making it through to the semi-finals of the 100m backstroke event.
Meanwhile Craig Fulton’s hockey side found themselves on the end of a 5-0 drubbing at the hands of the Netherlands, the Green Machine are without a point from their opening two fixtures.
