Hosts France dismantle Iceland, Kilkenny rule Leinster again, Kerry win fourth straight Munster title and Rory McIlroy finishes third in France

Clinical France end Iceland dream

Hosts France are through to the semi-finals of Euro 2016 after dismantling Iceland at the Stade de France last night.

A brace for Olivier Giroud and goals from Dimitri Payet, Paul Pogba and Antoine Griezmann, four of which came during a devastating first half, gave Didier Deschamps’ side a 5-2 win and brought the Icelandic fairytale to a juddering halt.

Ken Early was in Saint-Denis as France set-up a last four clash with the world champions, he writes: “France face Germany on Thursday in Marseille in a match many will consider the real final. The French look the more dangerous team but Germany are the most accomplished remaining opponents they could face.”

Kilkenny rule Leinster again

Kilkenny are the kings of Leinster hurling once again after they produced a typically dominant second half display to ease past Galway 1-26 to 0-22 at Croke Park and secure a 71st Leinster hurling title.

Meanwhile Kerry also continued their provincial dominance with a comfortable 3-17 to 2-10 win over Tipperary, the Kingdom claiming a fourth successive Munster senior football title. There was however concern for manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice after Colm Cooper suffered a shoulder injury but this was later revealed to be less serious than first feared.

In Ulster Tyrone thrashed Cavan 5-18 to 2-17 in their semi-final replay to set up a final showdown with Donegal.

McIlroy finishes third in France

Rory McIlroy had to settle for third place at the French Open after he failed to get going on Sunday, battling his way to a final round of 71 on what proved to be a frustrating day for the four-time Major winner.

Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee took the title after holding his nerve to post a fine final day 68, while in America Jason Day’s late capitulation opened the door for Dustin Johnson to swoop in and add the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational to the US Open title he won last month.
