Cycling: With the Commonwealth Games coming next month, Belfast rider David McCann is hoping to show his form against the clock in the time trial of the Tour de Langkawi in Melaka today, reports Shane Stokes.

McCann is both Irish time-trial champion and the record holder over the 10-mile distance, similar to today's distance.

"I am looking forward to the TT," he said yesterday. "I am interested to see how (race leader) David George does. He has had a cushy ride in the last few days thanks to his team, so he should be strong, but so should I."

Sébastien Hinault (Credit Agricole) won yesterday's eighth stage into Segamat. McCann and fellow Giant Asia rider Paul Griffin were 22nd and 41st respectively. They remain 15th and 34th overall.

Sri Lanka upset Australia

Sri Lanka scored an upset, 22-run win over Australia in the first one-day final at Adelaide Oval yesterday.

The tourists, who only scraped into the best-of-three finals series when South Africa lost their last three preliminary games, won the toss and piled on 274 for eight from their 50 overs.

Wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara made a patient 83 off 106 balls, and captain Marvan Atapattu grafted 53 from 77 deliveries to lay the foundations for the tail end to push the total past 270 with a late flourish.

The Australians could only manage 252 in reply before they were bowled out on the last over despite 80 from Michael Clarke and 56 from Simon Katich.

The second final will be played in Sydney tomorrow with the third to be played at Brisbane on Tuesday if required.

F1 set for return to Belgium

Belgian Grand Prix organisers have agreed a deal with Bernie Ecclestone to bring Formula One back to Spa-Francorchamps next year, just days after this year's race was cancelled.

This season's race was scrapped earlier this week when race organisers conceded defeat in their bid to renovate the track in time for the September 17th grand prix.

But, according to Belgian broadcaster RTBF, Spa has renegotiated their deal with Formula One commercial rights holder Ecclestone, securing a new deal to run from 2007 to 2011. The new arrangement has yet to be set in stone though, as it must yet be ratified by the regional Wallonian government.

This year's race was in doubt ever since its promoter filed for bankruptcy last October and then came Ecclestone's demand that the track be redeveloped.
