No record but Gebrseelassie completes Dubai hat-trick
ATHLETICS:Haile Gebrselassie completed a hat-trick of Dubai Marathon victories yesterday but the Ethiopian's hopes of setting a new world record were dashed by a bad back. The world champion crossed the finish line in a time of 2:06:09, 14 seconds ahead of Kenya's Chala Dechase Beyene but more than two minutes slower than his record time.

“I wanted to break the record, but what can I do?” the 36-year-old said. “It’s important to break my record, one day it will happen.”
The €1.4million event had attracted around 12,000 runners, according to organisers, with a €700,000 bonus pool on offer to anyone breaking Gebrselassie’s earlier world record.
In the women’s event, Ethiopia’s Mamitu Daska Molisa won in a time of 2:24:18.
Greipel increases his advantage
CYCLING:Germany's Andre Greipel strengthened his hold on the Tour of Down Under when he stormed to a third stage victory in the opening event on the UCI Pro Tour calendar yesterday.
Aided by his team-mates, Greipel edged out Robbie McEwen and his fellow Australian Graeme Brown in a tight finish to the 149.5 kilometre trek from Adelaide to Goolwa.
The 2008 champion has now won three of the four stages and holds an overall lead of 20 seconds with two days remaining.
“The last 5km, we always rode from the front and no-one could pass us, it’s a sign of strength,” said Greipel.
McEwen is second overall with New Zealand’s Greg Henderson third, but the leader’s biggest danger is team-mate Chris Rogers.
