Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder hopes to make "five or six" signings during the summer transfer window.
And while Roeder insists there will be no new arrivals this week, he has stressed the need to strengthen quickly to underline the club's ambition for next season.
"We need to add to the squad," he told BBC Radio Five.
"We've already lost one or two players - sadly Alan Shearer has retired, Lee Bowyer has gone to West Ham and Michael Chopra, who was a good squad player, has gone to Cardiff.
"That's three players down straight away and it wasn't a big squad in the first place.
"The chairman and I need to be busy signing quite few players to bring us up to the number we need to have a good season. We won't be signing anybody this week but we are talking to players at the moment.
"Hopefully by the time the Intertoto comes around in July we'll have one or two more new faces. Maybe there will be five or six in total before the new season.
"It's important for the players we have that they see us bringing in new faces over the coming weeks." PA
