Keith Treacy on target as Drogheda salvage a point against Bohemians

Sean Thornton’s equaliser helps the home side recover from a 0-2 deficit

Drogheda United 2 Bohemians 2

Keith Treacy’s first goal for Drogheda United helped the Boynesiders come from behind to salvage a point in a highly entertaining 2-2 draw at home to Bohemians. All four goals came in an eight minute period right at the end of the first-half.

The visitors should have hit the front early on when Jake Kelly was presented with an open goal but from 20 yards out he dragged the ball wide.

Keith Long’s team took the lead when Ismahil Akinade, from just inside the six-yard box, turned home a Lorcan Fitzgerald corner after 36 minutes. It was his seventh goal in ten games. Four minutes later Karl Moore showed great vision to chase down what looked to be a lost cause and pull a cross back to Paddy Kavanagh whose first time volley flew into the bottom corner.

Then former Irish international Treacy found the top corner of the net with a superb strike from about 25 yards out. The comeback was complete when Sean Thornton went on a mazy run through the Bohs defence and fired a low shot past Dean Delany to send the teams in level at the break.

Delany nearly gifted Drogheda the lead just after the hour mark.

Thornton looped a shot over his head which hit the crossbar.

With the goalkeeper stranded, the ball rebounded to Tiarnan Mulvenna whose overhead kick flew narrowly wide.

At the other end a minute later Paddy Kavanagh was denied by a great Schlingermann save.

Veteran striker Jason Byrne had a chance in injury time to seal it but couldn’t dig the ball out to shoot and the Drogheda keeper gathered.
