Republic of Ireland international Stephen McPhail has joined Cardiff City on a three-year-deal from Barnsley.

The 26-year-old midfielder helped Barnsley secure promotion to the Championship via the play-offs but recently rejected a fresh deal from the club.

He subsequently leaves on a free transfer as his current contract expires later this month.

"He has skill on the ball and he'll certainly have a serious impact for us next season," said Cardiff owner Sam Hammam of the 10-times capped Irish international who was also being tracked by Hull.

McPhail joined Barnsley on a free transfer two years ago after being released from a seven-year spell with Leeds United.  He will join compatriot Willie Boland at Ninian Park when he officially completes his move on July 1st.

Cardiff have also signed 22-year-old Newcastle striker Michael Chopra.
