Senegal have appointed Polish coach Henryk Kasperczak to manage the national side on a two-year contract.

Kasperczak, a World Cup semi-finalist with Poland in his playing days, has already coached the national sides of Ivory Coast, Tunisia and Mali.

"It's Henryk Kaspercazk who will be on the coaching bench for the Lions," the President of the Senegalese Football Federation Mbaye Ndoye said late last night, calling the Senegalese squad by its nickname "the Lions of Teranga".

Kasperczak is one of the most experienced coaches in the African Nations Cup tournament, with 21 games under his belt.

He took the Ivory Coast to the semi-finals in 1994, Tunisia to the 1996 final and the last eight two years later and Mali to the semi-finals in 2002. The next African Nations Cup will be held in Ghana in 2008.

After shining in the 2002 World Cup where they reached the quarter-finals, the Senegalese national side have performed disappointingly in recent tournaments.

They failed to qualify for this year's World Cup in Germany.
