KEIREN WESTWOOD:Arguably to blame for the fourth goal when beaten at a tight angle by Miroslav Klose but couldn't do much as some stunning strikes flew past him. Not even Shay Given would have made a difference. 5

SÉAMUS COLEMAN:

A proper full back who remained calm in the face of Germany’s attacking waves, even when team-mates didn’t show for a pass. Could have got in a challenge on Reus before first goal.

JOHN O’SHEA:

Anonymous, except when bundling Marco Reus over for what was a certain penalty. Wouldn’t have happened on Richard Dunne’s watch. But it is long established that O’Shea is no Dunne.

DARREN O’DEA:

A teenage defender diving in from behind a striker in the box would be rightly hammered by his coach. O’Dea is 25 now but he still inexplicably felled Klose to cough up the penalty.

STEPHEN WARD:

Shaky start meant he never looked like atoning for an atrocious Euros. Head down in possession and offers nothing in a game of this magnitude. Must be dropped before he is further exposed.

AIDEN McGEADY:

Badly exposed for first goal when he failed to track back and endured another anonymous outing on the left flank. With little space to operate in, failed to make any impression on proceedings.

JAMES McCARTHY:

Cannot show us what he is capable of under this Ireland coach. Overrun and his confidence visibly drained as he made a meek pass on 70 minutes when clearly out on his feet. Long night.

KEITH ANDREWS:

We know all we need to know about this man. He will never stop working for the Irish cause and last night in the face of humiliation Andrews can hold his head up high once again.

KEITH FAHEY:

Pulled off when Trapattoni changed the system at 2-0. He did what he was asked by the coach by constantly keeping Mesut Ozil in his peripheral vision but that’s not what this player is about.

SIMON COX:

Can it be accepted now that he is being played out of position? Probably not. We used to have Damien Duff on the left wing but now it is the Nottingham Forrest striker.

JON WALTERS:

So much asked of the man and worked hard but lacks the touch to really shine in the lone striker role at this level. Has a decent future in this squad but not necessarily in the starting XI.

MANAGER WATCH:

Giovanni Trapattoni last night oversaw one of the darkest moments in Irish football. His attempts to stem the tide utterly failed; his replacements and positioning of some players has people wondering is he bothered to do the research.

SUBSTITUTES:

Shane Long came on and at least showed he cared but why the coach persists with Andy Keogh is bewildering – his goal was irrelevant. Good to see Robbie Brady make a competitive debut but did his bright future need to be tainted by this?
