Soccer:Aston Villa manager Gerard Houllier's job remains safe despite his side slipping into the Premier League relegation zone. Supporters chanted 'you're getting sacked in the morning' after Villa were beaten 1-0 at home by Sunderland last night, slipping into the bottom three as a result.

Houllier insisted after the match he retains the support of club owner Randy Lerner and chief executive Paul Faulkner and it is believed his position is not currently under threat.

A goal from former Villa loan signing Phil Bardsley meant the midlands club slipped into 18th position in the table last night. Houllier received words of encouragement from Faulkner after the final whistle and is adamant that Lerner also remains supportive.

The former Liverpool boss said: “I spoke to Paul Faulkner and he was very supportive. I don’t doubt Randy Lerner’s firm support and determination. We are in this together for better or worse.”

Houllier admitted the fans’ chants were hurtful. Houllier said: “I know about the chants. I heard that. It hurts but I understand their frustration. “They were fantastic at the end and the players can’t complain about the fans.

“Every time we were under the cosh, or every time we had to come back into the game, they were pushing and supporting the team. What is important is that you have the backing of the chairman and the chief executive.”
