England 2 Ukraine 1:Captain John Terry struck five minutes from time to give England a 2-1 win over Ukraine and maintain their 100 per cent record in World Cup qualifying Group Six.

Striker Peter Crouch's 29th-minute volley put England deservedly ahead but they lost their way and were caught out when Andriy Shevchenko came off the bench to equalise after 74 minutes.

The game looked to be heading for a draw until Steven Gerrard knocked down a David Beckham free kick and centre back Terry stretched out a leg for the winner.

The victory made it five wins out of five for England, who lead the group standings on 15 points.

Scotland record much-needed win

Scotland 2 Iceland 1:Ross McCormack and Steven Fletcher both claimed their first international goals to keep Scotland's World Cup dream alive with a crucial win over Iceland at Hampden.

Indridi Sigurdsson had levelled for the visitors but George Burley’s men managed to claim the three points which allows them to put distance between them and their nearest rivals in second place in Group Nine.

Just hours earlier it emerged that captain Barry Ferguson and goalkeeper Allan McGregor - who had made his competitive debut in Saturday’s 3-0 defeat against The Netherlands - were dropped from the team for a breach of discipline.

The Rangers pair had indulged in a lengthy drinking session at the team’s Loch Lomond base following their return from Amsterdam at the weekend, costing them their place in the starting XI for the crunch clash.

However, both were named on the bench and were loudly booed by the Hampden crowd as the team was read about before the game.

Ballack adds to Wales’ misery

Wales 0 Germany 2:Germany continued their smooth progress towards the 2010 World Cup with a 2-0 win over Wales.

Michael Ballack set the Group Four leaders on their way before an own goal from Ashley Williams condemned John Toshack's young Wales side to back-to-back home defeats.

Germany opened the scoring through Ballack's long-range drive early in the first half and an error from Williams early in the second half gave them all the breathing space they needed.
