Faroe Islands 0 France 1: Brian Kerr's Faroe Islands emerged from their World Cup qualifier with France with their heads held high following this evening's match in Torshavn.

The former Republic of Ireland boss saw his modest side beaten by the minimum as Andre-Pierre Gignac scored his first international goal to give visitors all three points.

France dominated against the part-timers from the North Atlantic islands but had to wait until shortly before the break to open the scoring, Gignac collecting the ball with his back to goal and turning around to strike from close range.

Second-placed France closed the gap on Group Seven leaders Serbia, who have played one more game, to five points.

The former world and European champions, facing a struggle to avoid a play-off, will entertain Romania in their next game on September 5th before facing Serbia four days later in Belgrade.
