Soccer - Setanta Cup:Dundalk eased into the next stage of the Setanta Cup after comfortably holding Linfield to a 1-1 draw in the second leg of their first round tie at Oriel Park tonight. The result saw the Louth side go through 6-4 on aggregate.

The home side stretched their aggregate lead in the 11th minute following some shocking defending by the Irish League side. Aidan O’Kane’s back pass was cut out by Jason Byrne who, after rounding Blayney, tried to pick out Danny Kearns. Murphy failed

to clear his lines effectively and Gaynor was on hand to smash home the loose ball form just inside the penalty area.

David Jeffrey’s side kept plugging and were handed a reprieve just before the break. Marcus Kane’s corner from the right caused panic in the Dundalk six yard box and Michael Gault emerged from a crowd of bodies to force the ball home.

But that was as good as it got for the visitors and Dundalk will go on to meet Glentoran in the second round.

In tonight’s other tie, UCD bowed out of the competition after succumbing to a 2-0 defeat at Lisburn Distillery. Having been kept scoreless in the first leg, UCD were always going to need an away goal to progress but were unable to make the vital breakthrough.

Instead, Lisburn’s Gary Browne opened the scoring from the penalty spot midway through the first half and with UCD pressing for an equaliser, Scott Davidson killed them off four minutes from time.
