Martin Jol has refused to say whether Jermain Defoe had been disciplined by Tottenham for the 'biting' incident that overshadowed last Sunday's clash with West Ham.

Defoe allegedly bit West Ham midfielder Javier Mascherano but hit back at his critics with a goal in each half in the club's 5-0 Carling Cup thrashing of MK Dons last night.

The England striker was booked for his retaliatory action against the Argentinian but escaped further punishment from the FA because of Fifa's stance against retrospective sanctions.

But when asked whether Defoe had been fined by the club, Jol replied: "We have dealt with it internally.

"We have our own procedures with everything, dissent, whatever. Everybody knows the situation.

"I'm happy for Jermain because he has scored his first goals of the season from open play. I am happy that Robbie Keane scored as well."

It is understood Mascherano has since spoken by phone to Defoe.
