Scotland assistant manager Tommy Burns has stepped down just days after the  SFA announced they had a shortlist of candidates drawn up to replace boss Walter Smith.

Smith quit as national manager earlier this month to take over at Rangers following the departure of Paul Le Guen after seven turbulent months at Ibrox.

Burns's decision was disclosed today by Celtic, where he is a first-team coach.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Scottish national squad and have made a lot of good friends in the process," said Burns on Celtic's website.
