SWIMMING: Swim Ireland officials were relieved yesterday to learn that the possibility of industrial action by lifeguards at the Leisureland Complex in Salthill will not affect the staging of the multi-nations meet there this weekend.
Leisureland manager Pat Martin says that negotiations with union representatives were continuing, and while strike notice has been served it would not come into effect until next week at the earliest.
"There is no problem with the gala going ahead," he said.
Skylight roofing, running the length of the pool, was blown off during recent storms but no sooner had the damage been repaired than the current issue at the venue cast a doubt over the three-day event which is scheduled to start on Friday with 10 nations involved.
It has been confirmed that Ed Moses, not to be confused with his track and field namesake, will definitely be available to compete.
Moses, who campaigns out of the University of Virginia, is the current world 200 metre breaststroke record holder (two minutes 03.10 seconds) and is set to dominate in world swimming. The Irish Schools' Championships at Bishopstown, Cork at the weekend produced some excellent individual and team relay performances.
Gonzaga College cleaned up in the senior and junior freestyle and medley relays. Seniors Mark Doyle, John Mathews, Aidan O'Mahony and Eoghan McCarthy turned in a remarkable display to win the 4x50 metre relay for the third successive time. Their 1:41.85 will be difficult to equal. The Gonzaga junior medley squad also got in on the act with a win.
Mark Doyle (Gonzaga), Barry Murphy (Belvedere) and Anthony O'Toole (St Joseph's, Fairview) set the championships alight with blistering individual displays.
Eleanor Hogan of Maryfield and Paul Roban (Coolmine) lifted the senior 200 metres individual medley titles in style.
