Ian Poulter has been given a record-equalling £5,000 fine by the European Tour for verbally abusing a marshal at last week's Irish Open.

A contrite Poulter proposed his fine himself, European Tour executive director George O'Grady revealed on Sunday during the final round of the PGA Championship at Wentworth.

Ryder Cup player Poulter, 30, swore at the official during play at Carton House and was reported. He then issued a full apology via the European Tour.

The Englishman was not available for comment but his manager Paul Dunkley said: "As far as we are concerned the matter is closed. Ian regrets the incident which happened in the heat of the moment."

Neither Dunkley nor O'Grady were prepared to reveal the amount of the fine but O'Grady said: "It was substantially more than four figures."

A European Tour source, who requested anonymity, said the fine was £5,000.

Poulter, known for his eye-catching golfing garb, finished well down the field in the Irish Open last weekend after closing with an 85 and missed the cut at Wentworth.
