Terry Phelan is back in the Republic of Ireland soccer squad for the first time in two and a half years after being summoned for emergency duty for the end-of-season programme.
Phelan, on holiday in Miami, readily agreed to accept Mick McCarthy's offer to travel to Dublin after the manager had reviewed a steadily lengthening list of injuries ahead of Tuesday's match against Scotland.
Since winning the last of his 37 caps against Romania in a World Cup qualifying game at Lansdowne Road, the full back struggled with a knee injury which at one point threatened to end his career.
Eventually he fought his way back to fitness but after making only a handful of appearances for Everton on his return, he was transferred to Fulham last year.
"I've watched Terry play three games for Fulham this season and been impressed by him every time," said McCarthy. "He is a vastly experienced player who can still do a big job for us if we need him."
Also en route to Dublin after a sudden change of plans is Alan Mahon, who is required as midfield cover. He won his first cap as a replacement in last month's 1-0 defeat by Greece.
The latest withdrawal from the squad is Sunderland's central defender Paul Butler who conceded in his fight for fitness yesterday. Butler damaged an Achilles tendon in training last weekend which is responding slowly to treatment.
There could be more bad news for McCarthy today when Kenny Cunningham and Rory Delap, both rated doubtful for Tuesday's match at Lansdowne Road, are due to update him on their availability.
Meanwhile, Under-21 team manager Don Givens looks set to make several changes for tonight's match against Ghana (Eurosport, 7.0) in the Toulon International tournament. According to Givens, only Tranmere goalkeeper Joe Murphy and Stoke City midfielder James O'Connor emerged with any credit from the team's opening match against Colombia.
Manchester United centre half John O'Shea could make his debut while Liam George looks set to resume his club partnership with Gary Doherty up front.
