British entry Silk Cut, skippered by Lawrie Smith, surged into the lead on the sixth leg of the Whitbread Round The World race.

Silk Cut passed Norwegian pacesetter Innovation Kvaerner, captained by Knut Frostad, and, by the 1800GMT check-in, had established a lead of 5.4 nautical miles.
