Damien McGrane fired a five under par 66 in yesterday's final round of the European Tour Qualifying School at the Emporda Golf Club, Spain, to win the third tour card by finishing tied for third place with Denmark's Jeppe Huldahl on 23 under par 405.
The pair were five shots behind winner Richard McEvoy with Australian Wade Ormsby sandwiched between on 25 under par 403.
Starting the day at 18 under par McGrane burst from the starting gate by making four birdies in the space of six holes from the third and reached the turn in four under par 31 to go to 22 under for the tournament. He made two more birdies over the back nine and with only one dropped shot in the round he was safely home at 23 under par for the week.
He was awarded the third card with a better final round than Huldahl who shot 69.
"I'm proud of myself as I played really solid out there today and I'm just happy now that it's all over," said McGrane.
"I played some good golf here this week but I was a bit disappointed to make a par at the last, I made a good chip but it didn't work out. I'm happy enough I played well.
"Last year I remember I had a good start and then I faltered in the middle of the back nine and managed to par the last three holes just to make it.
"This year I've been inside the mark all the way and I knew I just had to stay there. The cut mark was moving up and up so I had to keep making birdies so I kept holing a few putts and hitting a lot of good iron shots."
Philip Walton added a 68 to finish on 12 under par 416, and was upbeat about his game.
"I hit the ball really well all week and it was just the putting that let me down," said Walton. "I'll play the Challenge Tour next year all the way round. They are giving 20 spots next year so I'll give it another year. If I was playing crap I wouldn't be doing it."
