A GOAL from Stuart Massey to minutes after the interval was enough to put Oxford into the fourth round of the FA Cup last night.

He ran through unchallenged before unleashing a 25-yard piledriver which left Millwall goalkeeper Tim Carter helpless after referee Clive Wilkes waved play on when Bobby Bowry fouled United full back Simon Marsh.

Massey, who scored Oxford's first goal in the 3-3 draw at the New Den to days ago, always looked most likely to break the deadlock. He went close in the third minute with a header from a Bobby Ford cross which Carter scrambled away for a corner.

Then 12 minutes later, Massey, who joined Oxford on a free transfer from Crystal Palace, again went close with a low shot.

Oxford's latest signing Martin Aldridge missed a sitter after 17 minutes when pushing the ball wide from five yards, but made amends three minutes later at the other end, clearing a Scott Taylor header from a corner off the line with Phil Whitehead beaten.

Millwall did not produce a single threat or have a shot on target in the second half. Oxford had to reorganise their defence for the last half-hour after Marsh limped off from the effects of Bowry's tackle, but the first division side could not take advantage.

On a miserable night for Millwall, their fiery midfielder Alex Rae was involved in two ugly incidents near the end. He appeared to clash with Oxford manager Denis Smith in front of the dug-out, then was shown the yellow card for a late tackle on Whitehead five minutes from time.
